CRITICAL PERSPECTIVE

Managing change debates are configured in the best interests of managers, rather than in the broader interests of employees and society, which is exemplified in the misrepresentation of resistance to change as something to be overcome. Dawson (2003, p20) observed with irony that ‘. . . given the number of failed change initiatives, those who question the need for change are often cast as the villains of the piece, as unable to adapt to the dynamic changing conditions of the modern world’. In this ‘Critical Perspective’, the role of stability is considered as well as the role of change-agent-centric thinking. There is consequently a need to rethink resistance and resistance to change terminology.
